What is Depth and Complexity?

Depth and Complexity is a framework co-created by Sandra Kaplan and Bette Gould for gifted education. It helps students think more deeply about content by looking for patterns, considering multiple perspectives, and exploring how ideas connect across time and disciplines.

Instead of assigning more work, Depth and Complexity focuses on better thinking. Students analyze details, uncover big ideas, and apply their understanding in new situations.

I co-authored Gifted Guild's Guide to Depth and Complexity with Lisa Van Gemert to make the framework practical and accessible for every teacher.
